Uninstalling and Removing Certificate Trust
Applies to the current macOS and Windows 11 releases. The steps below address the app, local data and the Windows development certificate separately.

Save the Data You Need First
Before uninstalling, first export an encrypted backup, check that it completed successfully and save the password separately. If you need to keep regular files or videos, check the backup options and the number of skipped items.Uninstalling an MSIX app on Windows may remove its app data. Do not assume that your history can still be recovered after uninstalling.
Before clearing local data, turn off WebDAV auto-sync and Nearby Sharing, then quit Hangrail normally. Manage cloud sync libraries, separate backups, exported files and copies received by other people separately. Uninstalling the app does not delete those copies.
Uninstalling on Mac
Deleting the app usually does not also remove a separately stored library. If you also want to delete your history, first confirm the actual library path in Hangrail settings and complete a backup. After quitting normally, remove only data you have confirmed belongs to Hangrail. Check custom locations, old libraries and external drives separately. Do not delete original work files referenced by the app.
- If you enabled “Skip the system floating thumbnail”, first turn it off in Hangrail under “Settings → Collection & Transfer → Screenshots & Recordings” to restore the system’s floating screenshot thumbnail.
- Turn off Launch at Login in Hangrail’s General settings. You can also remove the Hangrail login item in macOS under “System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions”.
- Choose “Quit Hangrail” from the Hangrail menu. Collapsing the shelf or closing the settings window does not quit the app.
- In Finder’s “Applications” folder, find
Hangrail.appand move it to the Trash. Once you are sure you no longer need the app, manage the Trash according to your usual file management practices. - In the system’s “Privacy & Security” settings, turn off or remove Hangrail’s permissions for Accessibility, Screen Recording, file access and other features as needed. The names shown may vary by macOS version.
To remove saved WebDAV credentials, find and verify the entries belonging to Hangrail in Keychain Access. Contact support first if you cannot confirm which entries belong to Hangrail. Uninstalling on Mac does not require importing or deleting development signing certificates or turning off Gatekeeper.
Uninstalling on Windows
To remove local remnants, first check the actual library location shown in Hangrail settings and confirm that you have a backup. Only remove folders you can confirm belong to Hangrail. Original files, data belonging to other apps and separate backups should not be deleted merely because they were part of a file transfer task. If WebDAV or other credentials remain, verify the Hangrail entries in Credential Manager before removing them as needed.
- After backing up, turn off Launch at Login in Hangrail. You can also disable its entry in Windows under “Settings → Apps → Startup”.
- Quit Hangrail normally from the system tray menu, and confirm that the shelf and settings windows are closed.
- Open “Settings → Apps → Installed apps”, find Hangrail, choose “Uninstall” and follow the system prompts.
- If you manually created desktop or taskbar shortcuts, remove them as needed. If you used the portable version, quit it normally and delete the folder where you extracted it.
Removing Trust in the Windows Development Certificate
Uninstalling the app and removing certificate trust are two separate actions. You only need to check this if you manually imported the certificate using the installation guide. Removing trust affects future installations or updates of packages signed with the same certificate. It does not uninstall apps that are already installed.
- Press Win+R and enter
certlm.mscand open “Certificates (Local Computer)”. Use administrator privileges if required by the system. - Expand “Trusted People → Certificates” and find the certificate whose Subject is
Hangrail Development. - Double-click to open “Details” and verify that the SHA-1 thumbprint is
FA0ED6F4EE444CCA0A6FB851FA37C409B2FBF7B4. Ignore spaces and letter case in the display; a matching name alone does not establish identity. - Only if both the Subject and full thumbprint match, and you are sure you no longer need to trust this publisher, return to the list, delete that one certificate and confirm the system prompt.
- If you originally imported the certificate into the “Current User” store, use
certmgr.mscto check “Trusted People → Certificates” against the same thumbprint. If there is no match, there is no need to add, move or delete other certificates for this purpose.
Do not delete certificates belonging to other publishers, Microsoft or the system, and do not clear entire certificate stores. The current installation guide uses “Trusted People”, not “Trusted Root Certification Authorities”. If you imported the certificate elsewhere or cannot verify its thumbprint, contact support first. If an older version used a different certificate, verify its identity separately.
After removing the development certificate, you can verify the result in the system certificate list. The Microsoft .NET runtime may be shared by other apps, so you do not need to remove it when uninstalling Hangrail. Before uninstalling the runtime, check whether other apps depend on it.
Cloud Data and Further Help
Deleting a remote sync library may affect other devices that are still syncing. First turn off sync on each device and check what you want to keep. Then manage the sync library and backups separately through your WebDAV service. Copies of files already sent to other people are managed by the recipients and cannot be recalled by uninstalling Hangrail.
